BOSTON (AP) — A Boston-area man was sentenced Thursday to life in a Massachusetts state prison for the grisly murder of his wife, Ana Walshe, who disappeared nearly three years ago with her body never found. Brian Walshe was convicted on Monday of first-degree murder, receiving a sentence that has no possibility of parole.

In November, Walshe pleaded guilty to charges of misleading police and illegally disposing of a body after confessing to dismembering his wife's corpse and disposing of it. He stated that he acted in panic after discovering her dead. Ana Walshe, a Serbian immigrant and real estate agent, was last seen after a New Year's Eve dinner at their home.

Prosecutors relied heavily on digital forensic evidence, which revealed Walshe's online searches for "best ways to dispose of a body" and "how long before a body starts to smell." Additionally, searches like "can you throw away body parts" and timelines related to missing person status further implicated Walshe during the trial.

CCTV footage also captured a man resembling Walshe disposing of heavy trash bags at a dumpster near the couple's home. Investigators later uncovered disturbing items, including a hatchet and hacksaw, in a separate location tied to Walshe's mother.

The Massachusetts State Crime Laboratory confirmed DNA evidence linking both Brian and Ana Walshe to certain items found, solidifying the prosecution's argument. Financial motives were brought to light as well, with claims of Walshe being the sole beneficiary of a $1 million life insurance policy on Ana. The couple was reportedly facing significant strain in their marriage amid pending legal troubles for Brian Walshe related to an art fraud case and other complications, including Ana's affair revealed during the trial. Walshe's attorney argued for a different narrative, portraying it as a case of sudden death rather than murder, but ultimately, Walshe did not take the stand as a witness.

The couple's three children remain in state custody, a grim reminder of the tragic circumstances surrounding this case.
