Family Escapes Spanish Wildfire, but Friends Lose Their Lives
A British family who were holidaying in Bedar, Spain, were forced to flee as a fierce wildfire engulfed the village. The flames moved rapidly, leaving seven houses to burn down and 12 people, including four Britons, dead. Even though the family escaped, they later discovered that close friends and relatives had succumbed to the blaze.
Lucinda Curtois and her partner Riyaz Cheytan, together with their teenage children, arrived in Spain on Thursday looking forward to a relaxed break. “We weren’t expecting a wall of fire,” she recalled, describing how the emergency spread faster than they could react.
After the fire passed, the family was relieved to have survived, but sorrow followed as news of 23 missing persons surfaced and confirmation that some local friends lost their lives. Curtois explained, “They left their home on foot; I don’t know why, but probably because their road was cut off.”
Spanish authorities continue to search for survivors while providing support to the affected community. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the renewed threat of wildfires across Europe during dry summer months.
