On Tuesday, July 7, 2026, 52‑year‑old Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was fatally shot by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents during a routine traffic stop in Houston. The incident began when the officers attempted to pull over a white van through which Salgado was driving accompanied by three co‑workers.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) later reported that the stop was part of a targeted enforcement operation aimed at a different individual—a supposed “target” who had resembled a person the agents had been surveilling weeks earlier. DHS said the officer fired in self‑defence after Salgado allegedly rammed an ICE vehicle, attempting to evade arrest.
Salgado’s family and the passengers in the van strongly dispute this narrative. They claim no ICE officer stood within the vehicle’s line of danger, and that the shooting was a tragic mistake. The attorneys for the men inside the van and Salgado’s sons also contested the DHS account, demanding a transparent investigation.
Officials admitted that none of the agents involved wore body cameras when the shooting occurred, and no visual evidence has been released. DHS has stated that half of its field officers are now equipped with body cameras, with the remainder scheduled to receive them within the next 60 days.
The incident has ignited protests across Houston, with residents demanding an independent inquiry. Four Democratic members of Congress—Sylvia Garcia, Al Green, Lizzie Fletcher and Christian Menefee—have written to DHS urging full accountability. In a separate but related development, the Mexican government announced it would file criminal complaints in the United States regarding the deaths of more than a dozen Mexican citizens in ICE custody or arrest operations.
