Parts of Nigeria's largest city, Lagos, have been transformed into an 'open-air gallery' as the city celebrates its first street art festival. This initiative aims to extend the reach of creativity beyond traditional galleries and museums, allowing the public to interact with artistic expressions in their daily lives.

Osa Okunkpolor, a prominent Nigerian graffiti artist known as Osa Seven, and one of the festival's founders, emphasized the festival's goals, stating, Public art allows people to interact with creativity in their everyday environment. It's about giving hope and showing what art can do to shape society.

The artwork showcases a variety of murals lining Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, a major road in the bustling Victoria Island area. This festival aims to bolster the visibility of street art in Lagos, which, despite the city's rich cultural heritage, remains relatively under-recognized compared to other African nations.

Renowned painter, Ernest Ibe, shared his perspective on the challenges of promoting street art in Nigeria, stating, The visibility is not too strong compared to other African nations. We are beginning to understand the impact of social murals and how it affects us socially and in our environment.

Among the participating artists is Babalola Oluwafemi, who traveled from Manchester to showcase her work that reflects the lively spirit of Lagos culture, capturing themes of joy and community vibrancy. She noted, I'm just telling how Lagos people love to party, love to go to parties, love to eat food. And they just love to be colourful. Her mural features a peacock, a symbol of beauty and pride in Nigerian culture.

Also contributing to the festival is artist Ashaolu Oluwafemi, who expressed the spirit of Lagos in her works. Lagos is a place where we have joy. There's joy, there's struggle. Even in the mood of your struggles, you have to be joyful. You have to make yourself happy.

The street art festival launched on Wednesday and will continue until Monday, December 15, drawing local residents and visitors alike to experience the lively expressions of art in Lagos.
