German airline Lufthansa will cut 20,000 short-haul flights over the summer, saying soaring fuel prices have made many journeys unprofitable for the firm. Jet fuel prices have doubled since the onset of the US-Israel war with Iran, which has disrupted production and transport across the Middle East.
Several airlines, including KLM-France and Delta, have also temporarily reduced their flight schedules or hiked ticket prices to manage new expenses. Analysts expect more cancellations and rising fares if the conflict persists.
The Gulf region supplies about 50% of Europe’s aviation fuel, predominantly through the Strait of Hormuz, which has been affected by recent tensions. The International Energy Agency warned that Europe could run out of jet fuel in weeks, although governments insist supply remains stable.
Lufthansa stated that while it will reduce its European flights, long-haul operations will continue, suggesting a more efficient approach to network management to save on fuel costs, estimated at around 40,000 metric tons. The cuts began immediately, with routes from Frankfurt to Poland and Norway being among those affected. This decision follows previously announced changes to the CityLine program, which will see the retirement of its 27 aircraft, influenced by rising operation costs and labor disputes.
