A man charged in a string of shootings near Atlanta that left three people dead, including a Department of Homeland Security employee who was walking her dog, died in jail Tuesday night, authorities said.
Olaolukitan Adon Abel, 26, was found unresponsive in his cell, according to a statement from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office. Officials provided medical treatment to the U.S. Navy veteran, but he was later pronounced dead.
The official cause of death has not been determined, but officials don’t suspect foul play. An internal review is currently underway.
Adon Abel was accused of killing Prianna Weathers, 31, and DHS auditor Lauren Bullis, 40, during the attack. Authorities were also seeking an additional murder charge for Tony Mathews, 49, who was injured in the attack and died shortly after.
As of now, authorities have not disclosed a motive for the shootings, and it is unclear if Adon Abel knew any of the victims. Reports indicate that at least one was targeted randomly.
Adon Abel was represented by a public defender, who stated that his death has deprived him of the opportunity to contest the charges in court.
In a recent statement, it was expressed that the victims' families, friends, and colleagues will now lack the answers that a public legal process might have provided regarding the circumstances surrounding these tragic deaths.
Adon Abel faced a variety of charges, including state malice murder and aggravated assault, following last week’s attacks. He also faced a federal charge for illegally possessing a firearm as a previous felon.
His roommates mentioned an argument about the air conditioning just before the shootings, marking a troubling escalation. The UK native became a U.S. citizen in 2022 while serving in the Navy, where he was recognized for superior performance.
An attorney from his prior assault case suggested that mental health issues were a significant concern, emphasizing the complexities surrounding Abel's behaviors and actions leading to these incidents. His situation remains a somber reminder of the challenges many face with mental health and the consequences it can bring.
