STATESVILLE, N.C. — Tragedy struck at a regional airport in North Carolina used for NASCAR and corporate flights when a business jet crashed Thursday morning, resulting in several fatalities. Sheriff Darren Campbell of Iredell County confirmed the loss of life, though specific numbers have not been released. The Cessna C550 aircraft met with disaster around 10 a.m. while attempting to land at Statesville Regional Airport, approximately 45 miles north of Charlotte, as reported by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The crash occurred at the end of a runway, prompting airport director John Ferguson to announce the airport's closure 'until further notice' to facilitate debris removal. In addition, the National Transportation Safety Board and the FAA are presently investigating the incident, which occurred amidst drizzle and cloud cover. Eyewitness footage captured by WSOC-TV depicted first responders rushing towards the flames and scattered wreckage. The airport is known for serving several Fortune 500 companies and NASCAR teams.
