US President Donald Trump has stated he is ordering 'a total and complete' blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers going into and out of Venezuela. In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump labeled Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro's government a foreign terrorist organization, accusing it of engaging in theft of US assets, alongside terrorism, drug smuggling, and human trafficking. 'Therefore, today, I am ordering A TOTAL AND COMPLETE BLOCKADE OF ALL SANCTIONED OIL TANKERS going into, and out of, Venezuela,' he added.
These remarks come after the US seized an oil tanker off Venezuela’s coast, a sign of escalating military activity in the area. Following Trump's declaration, he claimed Venezuela is 'completely surrounded by the largest Armada ever assembled in the History of South America', hinting at future military actions.
The Trump administration has frequently accused the Maduro regime of drug trafficking and has intensified military operations in the Caribbean, raising tensions in the region. The recent U.S. actions include the imposition of new sanctions against multiple ships allegedly linked to Venezuelan oil transport and restrictions against Maduro’s associates.
On the other hand, the Venezuelan government has condemned these actions, with Maduro rebuffing the claims of illicit activities and accusing the U.S. of seeking to control Venezuela's oil resources. The U.S. military presence in the Caribbean has been notably amplified in the days leading up to these incidents, including the deployment of the USS Gerald Ford, the world’s largest aircraft carrier, in close proximity to Venezuela.
