A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded over the weekend in southern Utah. Five members of a local family, including fire Captain Spencer Long, lost their lives in a sudden flash flood as they hiked at a campground near Bicknell.
The victims were Captain Long, his wife Katrina, and their three sons Reid, Thayne, and Gage. A daughter, who did not join the outing, is the sole survivor of the family.
Wayne County Sheriff's Office released a statement noting that heavy rains caused the flooding. Although the sheriff’s statement did not name the deceased, it confirmed the date and location of the incident.
Provo Fire & Rescue reacted promptly, announcing Captain Long’s death and offering their condolences. The department said, “We are absolutely heart‑broken by the loss of Captain Spencer Long and his family,” adding that thoughts were with all who were affected.
A GoFundMe page linked the sheriff’s announcement with the fire department’s statement, identifying the victims as Long, his wife Katrina, and their sons Reid, Thayne and Gage. It also mentioned the daughter who lived on another side of the tragedy.
The family had set out for a day’s hike at a campground near Bicknell on Friday. Sheriff’s deputies called the scene at about 5 p.m. local time. Initial search uncovered one male victim, and subsequently two more were found. The search continued into Saturday, ultimately locating the remaining two victims and confirming the fatality of all five family members.
Local rescue teams, volunteers and community members have been involved in bringing grief to the survivors and honoring the slain firefighter. The incident underscores the unpredictable nature of flash floods and the risks faced by outdoor enthusiasts.
